Year 2 maths picks up where Year 1 left off and extends significantly into the hundreds. Students are expected to be fluent with all their addition facts to 20 — not just able to work them out, but recall them quickly — and start using those to tackle bigger numbers.

Year 2 maths covers reading, writing and ordering numbers to 1,000; place value (hundreds, tens and ones); two-digit addition and subtraction using place value and number lines; multiplication through equal groups and arrays; the twos times table; doubling and halving within 20; fractions (halves, quarters, eighths); reading analog clocks to the quarter hour; simple data and graphs. The biggest shift from Year 1 is working confidently in the hundreds and building towards recall of basic addition facts rather than working them out each time.
Some signs to watch for: still counting on fingers for all addition and subtraction rather than recalling facts; unable to read or write numbers in the hundreds; confusion about what "place value" means in practice; reading that sounds laboured and word-by-word rather than fluent; difficulty understanding what a short paragraph says after reading it.
