What the Free Trial Actually Includes

A lot of tutoring services offer a "free intro session" that turns out to be 15 minutes with a sales pitch tacked on. That's not what this is.

The Merit free trial is a full 60-minute live session — the same length and format as every paid session. Before the session starts, you tell us which topics your child is finding hard, whether that's fractions in Year 5, writing sentences in Year 2, or keeping up with algebra in Year 8. The tutor builds the lesson around those areas. Your child isn't sitting through a generic overview; they're actually working on the stuff that's been giving them trouble.

The session runs on Merit's custom-built platform — not Zoom or a generic video call. The tutor works with your child through a mix of direct explanation and game-based activities like Balloon Pop, Word Hunt, Math Maze, and Aim & Shoot. These aren't decorative — the games are the practice. Getting a question right progresses the game; getting it wrong gives the tutor a signal to slow down and explain again.

What the Tutor Does During the Trial

While your child is working through the activities, the tutor is doing two things at once: teaching the content, and quietly assessing where your child actually is versus where they should be for their year level. This isn't a formal test — it comes out naturally through the session. A Year 4 student who breezes through two-digit multiplication but struggles with basic fractions gives the tutor useful information without the child feeling like they're being examined.

By the end of the session, the tutor has a real sense of your child's current level, which topics need the most work, and what kind of learner they are — whether they respond better to explanation first, or to trying a problem and working backwards from it.

What Happens After the Trial

After the session, you'll receive a brief summary of what was covered and where your child is at. There's no hard sell. If you'd like to continue, you can choose a plan and book ongoing sessions. If it wasn't the right fit, that's genuinely fine — we'd rather you know that now than after paying for several weeks.

If you do continue, here's what the ongoing pricing looks like:

👥

Group Sessions

Years 1–6: $29/week
Years 7–10: $35/week

Maximum 5 students per session. Live with a real tutor every class. Small enough that your child still gets direct attention.

🌟

1-on-1 Sessions

Years 1–6: $59/week
Years 7–10: $69/week

The full session focused entirely on your child. Good for students who are quite far behind or who find group settings distracting.

No lock-in contracts. Sessions are billed fortnightly. Cancel anytime — we just ask for reasonable notice so we can fill the spot.

Ready to book? Tell us your child's year level and what subject they need help with — we'll do the rest.

Why a Tailored First Session Matters

When a child has a bad experience with tutoring — sitting through content they already know, or being thrown into problems too hard for them — they associate tutoring with frustration. Getting the level right from session one makes a big difference to whether they want to come back.

That's why we ask parents to tell us where the gaps are before the session starts. You know your child better than we do. If your daughter always gets stuck on word problems but is fine with the calculations themselves, we know to focus there. If your son has been avoiding reading aloud because he doesn't like being corrected in front of his class, we work on that privately, without pressure.

The games are part of this too. Reading Race and Word Hunt are effective for English vocabulary and comprehension because they keep the child engaged with the task rather than mentally drifting. Math Race and Basket Catch work similarly for number fluency — the competitive element creates focus that a standard worksheet doesn't.

Who Merit Works Well For

Merit tutors Maths and English for students in Years 1 to 10. A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • We do not offer tutoring for Year 11 or Year 12 — no HSC, VCE, or ATAR preparation.
  • We do not offer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or other subjects outside Maths and English.
  • We do not have physical tutoring centres — all sessions are online.
  • We are not NDIS registered.

If your child is in Years 1–10 and needs Maths or English support, that's exactly what we do. If you need something outside that, we'll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction.
