Why Sydney Families Choose Online Tutoring

If you've ever tried to get a child to a tutoring centre in peak-hour Sydney traffic — Parramatta Road on a Tuesday afternoon, the M4 at 5pm, the school pick-up run through Hornsby — you already know the problem. Even when you find a great tutor, the logistics can make it unsustainable.

Online tutoring removes all of that. Your child logs in from the kitchen table at the same time every week. No uniforms, no driving, no parking. And because Merit sessions are live with a real tutor — not pre-recorded videos or a chat bot — students still get the interaction and accountability that actually produces results.

We've worked with families from every corner of Sydney: the Hills District, Inner West, Sutherland Shire, Northern Beaches, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Manly, North Shore, and everywhere in between. The distance to our tutors is always the same: zero.

Aligned to the NSW Curriculum (NESA Standards)

Merit Tutoring is based in Sydney, which means our tutors live and breathe the NSW curriculum. We follow the NESA syllabus closely — the same outcomes your child's teacher is working towards in the classroom. When your child comes to Merit for Maths, we're covering the same strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability. In English, we focus on reading comprehension, writing skills, grammar, and vocabulary — all mapped to what they're doing at school.

This matters for families preparing for NAPLAN. Students in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7, and Year 9 sit NAPLAN assessments. A lot of tutoring services give generic preparation that doesn't match what NSW students actually face. Because we know the NSW syllabus well, we can prepare students for the specific skills that come up in NAPLAN Numeracy and Literacy tests.

If your child's school uses Bump It Up Data Walls, reports progress against NESA outcomes, or participates in external competitions like the AMC or ICAS — Merit tutoring reinforces the same foundations those assessments draw from.

How Merit Sessions Actually Work

Every session is 60 minutes, live, with a real tutor on Merit's custom-built platform. It's not Zoom with a worksheet. The platform has purpose-built games — things like Balloon Pop, Math Race, Word Hunt, and Reading Race — that make the academic content genuinely engaging. Students aren't just watching; they're playing, answering, and competing with themselves to improve.

Groups have a maximum of 5 students. That's a hard cap — not "up to 8 when it suits us." Each student works at their own pace within the session, and the tutor moves around the group to check understanding and push each child forward. If your child needs more focused support, 1-on-1 sessions are available too.

The methodology is Play. Build. Grow. Live sessions use gamified challenges (Play). Between sessions, students unlock homework levels (Build). Parents can track progress directly on the platform (Grow).

How Much Does a Maths Tutor Cost in Sydney?

If you search for a private maths tutor in Sydney, you'll typically find rates between $50 and $95 per hour — and that's for one student, one hour, with no flexibility. Some specialised tutoring centres charge $80–$120 per session, and many require term-by-term commitments.

Merit's group sessions start from $29 per week for Years 1–6, or $35 per week for Years 7–10. That covers a full 60-minute live session with a qualified tutor. If you want 1-on-1, it's $59/week for Years 1–6 and $69/week for Years 7–10.

There are no lock-in contracts and no term-based commitments. You're billed fortnightly and can cancel anytime. For Sydney families managing school fees, after-school activities, and everything else — that flexibility makes a real difference.

Years 1 to 10 — Maths and English

Merit covers both Maths and English across Years 1 through 10. That means you can have a Year 2 child working on reading comprehension at the same time as a Year 8 sibling working on algebra, and both are in the right sessions for their year level and curriculum.

For younger students (Years 1–3), the focus is on building number sense, foundational reading, and writing mechanics. By Years 4–6, we move into more complex problem-solving, fractions, decimals, and extended writing. Years 7–10 cover the transition into secondary-level Maths and English — ratios, linear equations, simultaneous equations, analytical writing, and text analysis.

Is It Safe? What Sydney Parents Ask About Online Tutoring

Every Merit tutor holds a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) and goes through a careful screening process before working with students. Every single session is recorded — this protects your child, and it also means tutors maintain a high standard because they know the session is on record.

The platform is custom-built, not a generic video conferencing tool. Students see their tutor and classmates (in group sessions), and the gamified activities are integrated into the platform rather than being links to external sites. There's no need for your child to navigate to different apps or websites mid-session.

A lot of Sydney parents also ask about 1-on-1 versus group sessions for online tutoring. Group sessions (max 5) work well for students who benefit from a bit of social energy and gentle peer motivation. 1-on-1 sessions work better for students who need to focus on specific gaps or who find group settings distracting. Both are available at Merit, and many families use group for one subject and 1-on-1 for another.

For most students, yes — and for some, it's more effective. The key is that Merit sessions are live and interactive, not pre-recorded. Students engage with games, answer questions in real time, and receive guidance from a qualified tutor. Research consistently shows that frequent, interactive practice with immediate feedback is what drives improvement — and that's exactly what Merit sessions provide, regardless of whether they're online or in person.

Merit works with students from Year 1 upwards. For most families, the question isn't really about age — it's about readiness. If your child is starting to lose confidence in a subject, falling behind their class, or preparing for a transition (like starting high school or approaching NAPLAN), that's a good time to start. Earlier support is generally easier than trying to fill gaps after they've compounded over several years.

Yes. Merit is based in Sydney and our tutors follow the NSW NESA syllabus closely. In Maths, this means covering the strands aligned to NESA outcomes for each year level. In English, we focus on reading, comprehension, writing, and grammar as set out in the NSW syllabus. We also provide targeted NAPLAN preparation for Year 3, 5, 7, and 9 students.
